Overview : From an offensive perspective, I rated and ranked 3,093 Division 1 players from Start of Season — May, 8th 2025, with 80 minimum Plate appearance requirement. Players were assessed using a neutralized Run Value system to measure their overall offensive production, broken down into two core components:
“The Run Tool”— Captures the value generated from non-hit plate appearances (walks, stolen bases, etc.)
“The Hit Tool”— Measures a player’s offensive impact via hitting
“Overall” — A sum of Run Tool and Hit Tool, representing overall offensive contribution
Each player is ranked in these three categories: Run Tool, Hit Tool , and Overall . This week I’m releasing a list of all the baseball players and I will be breaking down the top 10 in this blog. The link to the full list of 3,093 players
Before I jump into the Top Player Breakdown. I received some feedback from a reader at a game in real life (pretty cool) and they had some questions about what the rates “Hit Tool” “Run Tool” “Overall Rate” mean and how it works…
So every offensive event has a run value associated with it, and I am breaking that down to a per Plate Appearance Basis. Some readers may ask why don’t you just look at RBI and Runs Scored to determine run value? Well, that’s a good point, but not every team is created equal. Some teams are juggernauts and other are well…not juggernauts, F Tier. If you play on better teams you will have more opportunities to score runs and drive more batters in so it would be “unfair” to judge players using traditional RBI and Runs Scored stats.
My goal was/is measure each players contributions individually and to create a practical statistic. One of the frustrations I have with traditional baseball stats is they do not have much practical use. Does do WAR, OPS, wOBA, etc. really have a use case? Not really. So I give every baseball event has a predetermined set run value. I then break those value down into the Hit Tool Rate (1B,2B,3B,HR) + Run Tool Rate (BB, SB, HBP) = Overall Rate.
Here is where players fall in terms of Run Value / PA or Overall Rate.

Why is Overall rate important? Use Case - For context, a lineup composed of a mix of Great , Above average, Average, and Below Average players.
With that in mind, let’s use that structure to breakdown our report to help identify top talent in the D1 Baseball. It would be too difficult to breakdown every great & elite player, so lets just take a look at every Elite Player by Age. If you want to look at every player here is the spreadsheet.
Age 18 : Great Range (.17-.23 RV/PA)
Levi Clark - is a 6’1” 211 lbs Freshman Catcher from the University of Tennessee. Levi has an Overall Rate of .227 which ranks him #54 in the country. A 0.2272 production rate is 42.14% better than the average D1 player .16. His Hit Tool is carrying his overall rate ranked #98 (17.86 % XBH rate & 9.52%HR rate) . His above average-great Run Tool is not far behind ranking #193 ( 21.93% BB rate). His SO rate is slightly high (21.93%), but I am ok given the production, age, conference. I love a catcher that can swing it and very nice to see the high walk rate, at his age it tells me he has advanced plate discipline. To top it off he’s doing it in the best college conference in the country, the SEC. Great Production, I love it, we tip our caps to this weeks #1 18 year old Levi Clark !!!
Age 19: Elite Range (>.23 RV/PA)
Garrett Wright - 5'11" / 185 lbs Sophomore Catcher from Bowling Green State University. Garrett has an Overall Rate of 0.239 which ranks him #26 in the country. His Run Tool is above average ranking #238 in the country ( 12.67% BB rate, 4 stolen bases 75% success rate, 6 IBB). His Hit tool is helped out by a .423 BA, .430 BABIP, and 7.69% SO rate. Interesting to see if he can keep it up. I like the contact shows advanced bat to ball skills. Elite Production, I love it, we tip our caps to this weeks #1 19 year old Garrett Wright !!!
Joe Tiroly - 6'0" / 200 lbs Sophomore IF from Rider University. Joe has an Overall Rate of 0.232 which ranks him #37 in the country. His great Run Tool ranks #100 in the country (18.67% BB rate, 19 stolen bases 95% success rate). From purely a data perspective he has a .483 BABIP, that’s pretty high. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to see Aiden play on an ideal spring baseball day in New Jersey. Mid 40’s with about 15-20 mph winds blowing in. Just beautiful baseball weather…He did a lot of things well. I had to nitpick his video a bit, but I think it’s something worth noting. He has an interesting set up at the plate. I could not tell for certain, but his back foot is tilted in a way that you do not see very often, maybe his entire body was shifted inward a bit. Usually you see hitters tilt the backfoot inward to ease your hips through the zone, his was the opposite. These clips are all from the same at bat, but you can see how he’s not getting through the backside all that well or consistently swing to swing. I believe some of that is caused by the set up on his lower half. Sometimes he clears the backside better than others, but he really has to fire that backside. This set up was consistent at bat to at bat.
I thought his last round of BP was cool, only took 1 swing pretty much saying ‘I’m good’, tells me he knows himself and what he wants to feel. Elite Production, I love it, we tip our caps to this weeks #1 20 year old Aiden Robbins !!!

I was fortunate enough to catch him play and his swing reminded me a bit of Grandal Grichuk and I really liked the way he tracked the ball out in CF. At the plate, I thought he was in and out of his legs a bit.
“Nice swing, he gets the ball out in front and lifts the ball. There is definitely room for growth. His front side gets firm, but it never gets hard. Ya gotta hit against a stiff front leg if you want to drive a baseball with authority. You can slap a ball and if you are big or strong enough muscle some baseballs with a bent front leg, but you are not buggy whipping balls with a bent front leg. Similar situation not as extreme as Peyton Bonds of Rutgers. You gotta know that there is a next level of untapped power potential with a minor mechanical adjustment. for 6’4”-6’5” the kid moves well. Shoring up the front side will also help with the sway in his hips.” I don’t know why the video is stalling. fast forward to 1:02 to see slo mo , hips front side…
For in depth video and Scouting report.

I was fortunate enough to catch him play earlier this year. Here are my notes :
“Game Impressions : Stocky build. Heavy in his legs during BP. No stride or little stride. In the field playing 3B…. Made a nice barehanded play charging a ball. Error is the 6th playing in, ball ate him up… Nice diving play to end the 7th….He sits really deep in his back hip. It’s one thing to be in your legs another to be in your leg and hips and chest over the plate. Trouble really clearing the back hip...I’d like to see his chest up a little bit more. When your as wide as he is and your chest is that far forward it’s tough to get back to neutral without overcompensating with a different body parts. I think he’s going to have a tough time clearing his hips in other at bats….well see….
The hips want to fire here, but they are stuck…He’s in his back hip and his back leg, as a result his first movement is just sideways to get out of it. turns into a knee collapsing motion.…. there’s a hip sway and the hands don’t catch up. This swing is obviously with 2 strikes…He just seems to far into that back side and too wide to get a good weight transfer. Shorten up the stance and lift up the chest a bit.
I thought this was his best swing of the day - his chest is up a bit more and his stance is a little more upright. There is still some hip sway, he’s still in the back hip and back leg and the first movement is a sway a forward. But he just misses this ball right here. Maybe go get a massage to loosen up your body a little. There are a lot of good things with this swing, but his hands, eyes can’t overcome the sway.
My recommendation : I would try tilting the back foot inward a bit to allow the hip and backside to clear a little easier. If you can clear the backside you won’t need to generate as much movement on the front side and sway.” Full Blog Scouting Report with Video

I was fortunate enough to catch one of his games earlier this year and was super impressed with his swing. Here are some of my game notes…
“Game Impressions : smaller frame. quick movements. stride, pre swing- contact reminds of Andre Ethier. Ethier obviously had that gorgeous one handed follow through but everything before that. Early Ethier did have the 1 handed follow through all the time…He doesn’t have the size Either had either, coming in around 5’10” 185 lbs, but they are both LHH - lower hands - high leg kick - simple swing - stays stacked well - higher finish. Very pretty swing….Not sure he’ll be able to get that one handed finish with the way he hold the bat, but a lot of players do develop into one handed finisher. Even Either was a 2 handed finisher. This is a clip from his 1st HR.”

Pitchers Ratings :
Pitching : There is limited data on pitchers in college. It’s almost not even worth doing a ranking, but I felt I needed to put my hat in the ring if this is what everyone else is doing. From the pitching perspective, I rated & ranked 2,541 Division 1 pitchers for the dates of 2/14/25–5/9/25 with a minimum requirement of 20 IP. The pitchers are rated the same way in terms of run value but instead of PA innings, but in the inverse manner. There’s no Batted Ball data, so I had to use MLB probabilities on the outcomes of hits. Like I said it’s not great, I’m not going to dive too deep into it.
