Division 1 Scouting Report - Amateur, URI vs. GMU (4/25/25)
Rhode Island (26-16) -vs- George Mason (28-14)
Date : 4/25/25
Level : Amateur — Division 1
Type : Scouting Report
Event : University of Rhode Island vs. George Mason University
Time : 2:00 PM
Weather : I feel the wind is bit more than 9 MPH. I think we are experiencing gusts at 15mph+. Wind is blowing in from Left Field to home plate. Not great conditions for hitters esp RHH trying to pull the ball. I mean it’s real gusty.
Position Player Impressions on the Teams :
This the rankings list from my Weekly College Report, published on 3/27/25. Data for this report was pulled on Wednesday, April 23, 2025 6:47 AM ET. I sorted the list by the teams playing to give me an idea of who to watch. I am going to focus on the players with green cells. Green means they are performing better than roughly ⅔ of college baseball. Here is a list of the position players I will be watching more intently today with green cells.
Pitching First Impressions :
GMU Starter #30 - FB , SL.
URI Starter #15 - FB, Split,
Umpire is giving a little on the edges.
My primary focus is offensive players
Anthony DePino URI #28
Game Impressions : Stocky build. Heavy in his legs during BP. No stride or little stride. In the field playing 3B…. Made a nice barehanded play charging a ball. Error is the 6th playing in, ball ate him up… Nice diving play to end the 7th.
BP - https://x.com/ChrisBzozowski/status/1915829324936347715
AB 1: swing is slightly different from BP. Tried pulling outside fastball. Roll over to SS. 6-3
hips flew open on a pitch that was on was definitely away. from this position he cannot drive an outside pitch. He’s probably not going to do too much with this pitch. tip you cap partially, but he really gave himself no chance at driving this ball the other way. He sits really deep in his back hip. It’s one thing to be in your legs another to be in your leg and hips. Trouble really clearing the back hip...
I’d like to see his chest up a little bit more. When your as wide as he is and your chest is that far forward it’s tough to get back to neutral without overcompensating with a different body parts. I think he’s going to have a tough time clearing his hips in other at bats….well see
AB 2 : struck out swinging.
Like my girl Shakira says, the hips don’t lie. The hips want to fire here, but they are stuck…He’s in his back hip and his back leg, as a result his first movement is just sideways to get out of it. turns into a knee collapsing motion.…. there’s a hip sway and the hands don’t catch up. This swing is obviously with 2 strikes…He just seems to far into that back side and too wide to get a good weight transfer. Shorten up the stance and lift up the chest a bit.
AB 3 : popped up to SS -
I thought this was his best swing of the day - his chest is up a bit more and his stance is a little more upright. There is still some hip sway, he’s still in the back hip and back leg and the first movement is a sway a forward. But he just misses this ball right here. Maybe go get a massage to loosen up your body a little. There are a lot of good things with this swing, but his hands, eyes can’t overcome the sway.
My recommendation : I would try tilting the back foot inward a bit to allow the hip and backside to clear a little easier. If you can clear the backside you won’t need to generate as much movement on the front side and sway.
AB 4: reached on a fielder's choice; MCKENZIE out at second ss to 2b
More of the same here. On the take, you can really tell where is body and back leg are. The back leg is just collapsing on the take here. There no stride variations that going to fix being that deep in the back hip.
AB 5: grounded out to 2b.
Nicolas Notarangelo URI #2
Game Impressions : smaller frame. quick movements. stride, pre swing- contact reminds of Andre Ethier. Ethier obviously had that gorgeous one handed follow through but everything before that. Early Ethier did have the 1 handed follow through all the time…He doesn’t have the size Either had either, coming in around 5’10” 185 lbs, but they are both LHH - lower hands - high leg kick - simple swing - stays stacked well - higher finish. Very pretty swing.
AB 1: ground out.
AB 2 : pop up 2B I really like the swing here, he just missed the pitch.
AB 3 : homerun to right field. I love his load right here stays stacked. It’s just really pretty.
AB 4: jammed to 2B. hand really calm, even on his takes really remind me of Either.
Not sure he’ll be able to get that one handed finish with the way he hold the bat, but a lot of players do develop into one handed finisher. Even Either was a 2 handed finisher. This is a clip from his 1st HR.
James Quinn-Irons GMU #10
Game Impressions : Good frame 6’3-6-4” runs well in AB #2 triple. played CF - I thought he tracked the ball well in CF top 8th first out. At the plate, I thought he was in and out of his legs a bit.
AB 1: BB after being down 0-2… sped up to 2x after the first two pitches…
AB 2 : triple to RCF.
Nice swing, he gets the ball out in front and lifts the ball. There is definitely room for growth. His front side gets firm, but it never gets hard. Ya gotta hit against a stiff front leg if you want to drive a baseball with authority. You can slap a ball and if you are big or strong enough muscle some baseballs with a bent front leg, but you are not buggy whipping balls with a bent front leg. Similar situation not as extreme as Peyton Bonds of Rutgers. You gotta know that there is a next level of untapped power potential with a minor mechanical adjustment. for 6’4”-6’5” the kid moves well. Shoring up the front side will also help with the sway in his hips.
AB 3 : sac fly to CF
Once again not getting a firm front side lets the pitcher get in his kitchen a little bit. you have to keep the back hand strong and hit against a stiff front leg.
AB 4: HBP
Reminds me a little of Randell Grichuk.
AB #5 jam shot off third base glove. single advances to second on wild throw by SS.
Owen Hull GMU #6
Game Impressions :
AB 1: K. short follow through swing.
AB 2 : sac
AB 3 : bb
AB 4: K looking
AB 5: K swinging
Brody McKenzie URI #12.
Game Impressions : K, K, HBP, 6-3
===
Reece Moroney I thought had a nice little swing.
AB 1 : 4-3
AB 2: reached on FC, SB
AB 3: BB
AB 4 : Fly out to CF - LCF. - for some reason I can’t upload the video of his swings from this at bat.
That’s all for this scouting report. I have another scouting report I am gathering video for the Butler/Seton Hall game. I also made prior commitments to a few other blogs so, the scouting report will have to take a back seat for a few days. It’s coming though.
