Overview : From an offensive perspective, I rated and ranked 2,412 Division 1 softball players from Start of Season — May 3, 2025, with no minimum Plate appearance requirement. Players were assessed using a neutralized Run Value system to measure their overall offensive production, broken down into two core components:
“The Hit Tool” — Measures a player’s offensive impact via hitting
“The Run Tool”— Captures the value generated from non-hit plate appearances (walks, stolen bases, etc.)
Overall— A sum of run value hitting and run value running, representing overall offensive contribution
Each player is ranked in these three categories: Run Tool, Hit Tool , and Overall . This week I’m releasing a list of all the softball players and breaking down the top 10, as well as the biggest movers!
Before we jump into the Top 10 Rankings. I have read some comments online and a lot of times it’s difficult to gauge internet comments. I prefer talking with someone in person. That said, I received some feedback from a reader at a game IRL and they had some questions about what the rates “Hit Tool” “Run Tool” “Overall Rate” mean and how it works…
So every offensive event has a run value associated with it, and I am breaking that down to a per Plate Appearance Basis. Some readers may ask why don’t you just look at RBI and Runs Scored to determine run value? Well, that’s a good point, but not every team is created equal. Some teams are juggernauts and other are well…not juggernauts, F Tier. If you play on better teams you will have more opportunities to score runs and drive more batters in so it would be “unfair” to judge players using traditional RBI and Runs Scored stats.
My goal was/is measure each players contributions individually and to create a practical statistic. One of the frustrations I have with traditional baseball stats is they do not have much practical use. Does do WAR & OPS really have a use case? Not really. So every baseball event has a predetermined set expected run value. I then break those value down into the Hit Tool Rate (1B,2B,3B,HR) + Run Tool Rate (BB, SB, HBP) = Overall Rate. The best use case for this would be lineup construction. You can create a lineup to project your teams runs scored.
Sounds cool. Show me how it’s done then Boz…Well the first thing you would need to do is open the spreadsheet I created and look a the rates in orange..
i.e. This week Bri Ellis has a mind boggling Overall Rate / PA of .389 … .094 coming from her Run Tool & .296 coming from her Hit Tool.
If Bri Ellis were to get 4 plate appearances in the game, her game run value would be (.389 PA * 4 plate appearances = 1.56 run value) For context, a lineup composed entirely of Bri Ellis’ would typically produce roughly 14.014 runs a game. She really is next level. #BriBombs
I know that sounds ridiculous, but Bri Ellis has been on another planet this year. The Avg Overall Rate of a D1 Softball Player is .622, respectfully, which means Bri Ellis 150% better than the average player. You would need 2.5 average players to equal the production Bri puts out. Bri’s production is 34.77% better than the next closest player in D1 Softball. The next closest player to Bri is McKayla Timmons of Ball State who is 115.50% better than the average player with a 4 PA run value of 1.34. I know I am talking about a lot of numbers and I’ll get to the top 10 breakdown, but McKayla’s production at the Catchers position is something people should also take notice of. Really two exceptional players in their own right.
Here is a general rule, to help you understand where most player fall in terms of run value Per Game or (4 PA) and how many runs that would be as a team.
